North Port, Fla. – The North Port City Commission voted 3-1 to approve a city wide Human Rights Ordinance Oct. 27.

The HRO bans discrimination against employment, housing and public accommodations based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Florida House leaves Bathroom Bill flushed and the Conscience Protection Bill unadopted

May 1 was to be the day to get things done at the Florida Capitol, during the final session for state representatives and senators. Instead, the halls were silent as the House adjourned three days early due to a budget impasse with the Senate over Medicaid expansion.

House Speaker Steve Crisafulli (R-Merritt Island) thanked the state representatives for their “patience as we work through a really incredibly unusual session” before declaring adjournment sine die on April 28.

Hawaii House passes marriage equality bill

Honolulu (AP) –  The Hawaii House of Representatives passed a special session bill on Friday night legalizing gay marriage, setting up a final approval by the state Senate before it’s sent to Gov. Neil Abercrombie for his signature.

House lawmakers approved the bill after a grueling 12-hour session with breaks, capping more than a week of public testimony and debate that drew passionate crowds both for and against gay marriage.

Hawaii lawmakers debate marriage equality in special session

Honolulu (AP) – Hawaii’s battle over gay marriage brings state lawmakers back to work after the governor called a special session that could make the islands a wedding destination for more couples.

Some 1,800 people signed up to testify in person at a Senate committee hearing, which was carried live on TV and local news websites. Dozens of people gathered around three televisions in the Capitol rotunda, cheering testimony they agreed with and singing songs.
