Two inspiring individuals prove leaving the corporate world can really pay off

When I called Victor Bokas for an interview, he was in the middle of working on a five-foot-square commissioned painting for an art collector in Spain. “I could have never done this had I stayed in the corporate world,” he said to me with an incredulous half-laugh. Since being let go from his position as a senior graphic designer at Tupperware Brands in 2015, he has devoted his full energy to his craft, and it’s made all the difference.

Mandy Keyes, owner of Community Cafe in the Grand Central District of St. Petersburg, also left her corporate position as an interior designer to open a storefront on Central Avenue, the area’s main thoroughfare. When I walked into the cafe for our interview, she was in the thick of taking orders, clearing tables, fielding questions – all the things you’d expect from a small-business owner – popping up at intervals during our conversation to tend to her customers. At 10:30 a.m. on a Saturday, the place was packed. It’s working.

Transgender Miss Universe contender speaks up for trans kids

MADRID (AP) | The first transgender woman to compete in the global Miss Universe pageant says that, whether she wins the beauty title or not, she wants to make history as a role model for trans children around the globe.

“If my going through all this contributes for the world moving a little step forward, then that’s a personal crown that will always accompany me,” says Angela Ponce, the 26-year old model and activist representing Spain.

Angela Ponce will be the first transgender woman to compete for the Miss Universe crown, the Huffington Post reports.

Ponce, 26, won Spain’s Miss Universe in June making her the first transgender woman to earn the title. She will now advance to compete in the worldwide Miss Universe pageant which will take place in the Philippines in December.

Spanish club Rayo to support charities with jersey sales

MADRID (AP) – Spanish football club Rayo Vallecano says it will donate to charitable causes such as ones fighting cancer and sexual discrimination for each of its away jerseys sold this season.

The Madrid-based club’s first away jersey will feature a diagonal rainbow-colored band, with each color representing one of seven charitable causes the club will donate a euro to for each jersey sold.
