Mayor Pete Buttigieg talks historic campaign for LGBTQ History Month

Pete Buttigieg, who has served as mayor of South Bend, Indiana since 2012, came out as a gay man in a self-penned essay published by the South Bend Tribune on June 16, 2015. In April of this year, he declared his candidacy for president of the United States.

Buttigieg spoke with Philadelphia Gay News publisher Mark Segel by phone ahead of the Human Rights Campaign’s LGBTQ-focused presidential town hall which aired on CNN Oct. 10. The interview was conducted exclusively for The LGBT History Project, a coalition of LGBTQ print and web publications including Watermark which span coast-to-coast.

Pete Buttigieg surges in new Iowa poll

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) | John McAnear, a 77-year-old Air Force veteran, stood in an audience of hundreds in suburban Des Moines with an oxygen tank at his side, wheezing as he implored Pete Buttigieg to protect the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Democratic presidential hopeful offered a respectful, if perfunctory, “thank you for serving” and skipped any attempt to bond over their mutual military service. Instead, Buttigieg offered a list of proposals to fix the VA.

A documentary focused on South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s 2020 presidential campaign run is currently filming.

Story Syndicate, a production company headed by filmmakers Liz Garbus and Dan Cogan, has started filming Buttigieg’s campaign events and the recent Democratic debate in Miami, according to Axios.

Indiana mayor talks marriage, millennials

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) | Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg told voters March 23 that his marriage to his husband exists “by the grace of a single vote on the U.S. Supreme Court.”

The South Bend, Indiana, mayor visited South Carolina for the first time since announcing his presidential exploratory committee. The 37-year-old would be the first openly gay presidential nominee from a major political party.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg said Sunday he supports the students at University of Notre Dame who walked out on Vice President Mike Pence during his commencement speech over his anti-LGBT views and the Trump administration’s approach to marginalized communities.

Buttigieg, the openly gay mayor who came to national prominence during his run to become chair of the Democratic National Committee, made the remarks to the Washington Blade about students within his city at the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund’s annual D.C. brunch when asked about the walkout.
