Defense Secretary James Mattis delivered his recommendation to President Trump on transgender military service in compliance with a directive to the Pentagon earlier this year, officials have told the Washington Blade.

Hogan Gidley, a White House spokesperson, confirmed Mattis delivered his recommendation to Trump, but wasn’t forthcoming about the next steps.

Defense Secretary James Mattis is poised to make recommendations to the White House this week on transgender military service, although that hasn’t happened as of Wednesday afternoon despite a deadline of that day, a defense official said.

Maj. David Eastburn, a Pentagon spokesperson, said the Mattis recommendation is forthcoming, but not yet submitted.

Appeals court rebuffs delay in transgender military enlistments

The first federal appeals court has rebuffed the Trump administration’s request for additional delay in transgender enlistments in the U.S. military, setting up potential action on the issue from the U.S. Supreme Court by the end of the year.

The U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals denied the U.S. Justice Department’s request for a stay on U.S. District Judge Marvin Garbis’s decision against Trump’s transgender military ban as it pertains to enlistments.
