The Dru Project awards 2019 LGBTQ youth scholarships

ORLANDO | The Dru Project announced the five recipients of the 2019 Spirit of Drew Scholarship ahead of the organization’s third year anniversary, which will be on June 14.

Drew Adams, who will attend the University of Central Florida; Emily Silverio-Williams, who will attend Florida International University; Dean Rooney, who will attend Florida State University; Evan Malzberg, who will attend Columbia University; and Dalton Vanderford, who will attend the University of South Florida, will each receive $5,000 toward their education.

N.H. governor signs two pro-LGBTQ bills

Republican New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu on Friday signed two LGBTQ rights bills into law.

Sununu signed House Bill 1319, which adds gender identity to New Hampshire’s nondiscrimination law. He also signed House Bill 587, which bans so-called conversion therapy for minors in the state.

Kansas graduate gives $1 million for LGBTQ students

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The University of Kansas will use a $1 million gift to provide scholarships to LGBTQ students.

The university announced Thursday that 60-year-old Chad Leat donated the gift this week to his alma mater. Leat, of New York City, is retired vice chairman of global banking at Citigroup.

2018 Theatre Odyssey’s Ten-Minute Playwriting Festival

The 2018 Student Ten-Minute Playwriting Festival will be held February 3–4, 2018, at the Jane B. Cook Theatre (FSU/Asolo Center for the Performing Arts). Scripts will be judged by three theatre professionals. The winning playwright will receive $1,000 and the runner-up will receive $500. These cash scholarships are generously provided by the Dorothy B. Templeton Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. 

The 2018 Student Ten-Minute Playwriting Festival is supported in part by our Season Presenter, CAN Community Health, and the Dorothy B. Scholarships will honor Pulse victim Cory Connell

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Tara Connell didn’t see her son’s last text until hours after she found out he was never coming home.

Cory Connell, 21, told his mother June 11 he was going to the Pulse nightclub with his girlfriend Paula Blanco and her teammates from the Orlando Anarchy, an all-female football team he helped coach. The women wanted to teach him to salsa.
