Marriage debate begins again in Chile Senate

SANTIAGO, Chile | The Chilean Senate on Jan. 9 once again began to debate an equal marriage bill.

Former President Michelle Bachelet introduced the bill in September 2017, but the debate ended when current President Sebastián Piñera’s administration took office at La Moneda a few months later.

President signs transgender identity law in Chile

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) | Chile’s president has signed a law that lets people over the age of 14 change their name and gender in official records.

Center-right President Sebastian Pinera says the measure signed Nov. 28 will help overcome “painful, discriminatory experiences.” But he says a full solution to discrimination against transgender people “requires a cultural change, which has to be in the soul, in the heart of all Chileans.”

Chile’s congress passes ‘historic’ gender identity law

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) | After a five-year battle, Chile’s congress passed a gender identity law September 12 that allows transgender people over 14 years of age to change their name and gender in official records.

Activists called the with 95-46 vote in favor of the law “historic,” with Chile’s Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation saying it “will change the quality of life of thousands of people.”
