4 accused gays whipped in north Nigerian court

Lagos, Nigeria (AP) – Four young men were convicted of gay sex and whipped publicly March 6 in an Islamic court in northern Nigeria, a human rights activist said.

The four were among dozens caught in a wave of arrests after Nigeria strengthened its criminal penalties for being gay with the new Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act in January.

Nigerian man receives 20 lashes for being gay

Bauchi, Nigeria – A gay Nigerian man has received twenty lashes after an Islamic court has convicted him of engaging in gay acts more than seven years ago.

According to the BBC, the fact that the acts took place so long ago and because Mubarak Ibrahim, 20, told a judge he’s since stopped, the judge opted not to have Ibrahim stoned to death.

Ibrahim was also fined about $30. The BBC reports that he received his lashes while lying on a bench in a packed courtroom and he screamed in pain while the punishment was administered.

Anti-gay Nigerian laws also jeopardize those diagnosed with AIDS

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) – Local and international groups fighting AIDS warned on Jan. 14 that a new Nigerian law criminalizing same-sex marriage and gay organizations will jeopardize the fight against the deadly disease.

Human rights activists reported that dozens of gay men were being arrested in northern Nigeria in an apparent response to the law. The United States, Britain and Canada condemned the law, with Secretary of State John Kerry saying Monday that it “dangerously restricts freedom” of expression and association of all Nigerians.
