Diversity takes a back seat in Oscar nominations

Diversity was not on the minds of the academy members when Oscar nominations were announced Jan. 13.

Todd Phillips’ R-rated comic book smash “Joker” topped all films with 11 nominations, while Martin Scorsese’s elegiac crime epic “The Irishman,” Quentin Tarantino’s 1960s Los Angeles fairy tale “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” and Sam Mendes’ continuous World War I tale “1917” all trailed close behind with 10 nods apiece.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s 77th annual Golden Globe Awards are now a matter of history, and in an evening of surprises and upsets, several of the most noteworthy moments reflected the growing significance of LGBTQ voices in the content created by the film and television industry.

Going into the presentation Sunday night, the slate of nominations included nods for several LGBTQ-inclusive films, actors and characters.

Golden Globe nods recognize queer content, performers

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced the nominations for its 77th annual Golden Globe Awards, and once again the list of nominees includes nods for several LGBTQ-inclusive films, actors and characters.

The honorees were announced in a Los Angeles presentation Monday morning by Tim Allen, Dakota Fanning and Susan Kelechi Watson. They were joined by Golden Globe Ambassadors Dylan and Paris Brosnan, HFPA President Lorenzo Soria, and Dick Clark Productions Executive Producer and Executive VP of television Barry Adelman.

Delta blasted for straight-washing ‘Rocketman’

“Rocketman,” the acclaimed musical biopic about Elton John, is making headlines again this week as Delta Air Lines defends itself against accusations of showing straight-washed, edited versions of its in-flight movies.

The new controversy began Oct. 29, when an outcry sprang up on social media after Entertainment Weekly’s digital director Shana Naomi Krochma went on Twitter to scold the airline for removing most of the film’s gay content.

Samoa bans ‘Rocketman’ over gay sex scenes

“Rocketman,” the fantasy musical biopic about Elton John, has been banned in Samoa by the country’s censor Leiataua Niuapu Faaui over its depiction of homosexuality.

Faaui told newspaper Samoa Observer that the film conflicted with Samoa’s “culture and our Christian beliefs” and that it is “not good for public viewing and violates laws against same-sex marriage.”

‘Rocketman’ star Taron Egerton says he feels ‘at home’ at gay clubs

Taron Egerton, who stars in the upcoming Elton John biopic “Rocketman,” opened up about how he feels more “at home” going to gay clubs than he does going to a football match in a new interview for GQ UK.

Egerton says he’s always felt “like something of an imposter” as “The ‘guy,’ the ‘bro,’ the ‘stunt guy’” like his role in “Kingsman.”

Paramount wants to edit Elton John’s gay sex scene in ‘Rocketman’

Paramount Studios wants to censor a gay sex scene featured in the Elton John biopic “Rocketman” to help the film achieve a PG-13 rating, according to Baz Bamigboye of the Daily Mail.

Bamigboye reports that Paramount Studios are pressuring director Dexter Fletcher and producer Matthew Vaughn to edit down a gay sex scene featuring Elton John (Taron Egerton) and John’s manager and lover John Reid (Richard Madden). The 40-second scene shows the couple’s “fully exposed white derrieres” but Bamigboye says the scene is “tastefully done.”

Actor Taron Egerton clarified his sexuality in an interview with Radio Times after speculation swirled that he had come out.

Egerton, who appears as Elton John in the upcoming biopic “Rocketman,” had posted a photo of a man on his Instagram captioned “Cutie. My boy.” One user asked if this means Egerton had a boyfriend and Egerton liked the comment.

The film follows John from his youth through his evolution into a musical idol in the 1970s as he prepares for the release of his critically-acclaimed album “Honky Chateau.”
