Orlando Fringe’s annual preview shows give Fringe-natics an opportunity to view a two minute presentation to see what’s in store for this year’s festival. Broken into two categories, General Audience & Mature Audience – both shows are always well attended. The General Audience was hosted by Eric Pinder & Mature Audience by Rob Ward as Pepe.

This year’s preview was filled with dancers, contortionists, a Russian dog shot into space, a fabulously flamboyant Frog/Pig hybrid, ghosts and ghost-bustin’ Shakespearean performers. The performers ranged from the very young in the Xanadu Jr. production, to the young at heart with the Downtowners, a group of musically inclined senior citizens.

Orlando performer Blue Star is one person who embodies empowerment and being comfortable in your own skin. Blue came to Orlando in 2000 to attend Full Sail University after a successful dancing career in Atlanta and New York. She planned to stay for just 13 months; she never left. Everyone who is anyone knows our local gem, Blue Star. Recently, in an online feature on USAToday’s 10Best – the Venue and Blue were praised for bringing the burlesque scene into the spotlight of the artistic side of the Ivanhoe Village. Thanks to Blue and many others, the #OneLove campaign has been making its rounds these last few years, named for the passing of John “Tweeka Weed” Barber – truly a talent whose light was taken too soon due to complications with an aggressive form of cancer.

Tweeka/Barber was recently the subject of an article of Georgia Voice in an article by old friend Bill Kaelin titled “The Drag Queen who changed my life.” Kaelin mentions when he was hanging out with Tweeka/Barber, he knew he was hanging out with royalty, and through his street wise and larger than life personality, he learned a lot about the community and the Atlanta scene. Two local legends, both praised for being talented and real people.
