New Kansas guv latest to sign order against anti-LGBT discrimination

On her first day of office, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly on Jan. 15 became the latest new governor to sign an executive order barring anti-LGBT discrimination.

Kelly signed the directive, Executive Order No. 19-02, shortly after being sworn into office in Topeka. The order bars discrimination in state employment, services and contracts based on numerous characteristics, including sexual orientation and gender identity.

Same-sex marriage case may affect discrimination, religion bills

LANSING, Mich. (AP) – Gov. Rick Snyder hopes to resuscitate legislation that would protect gay and transgender residents from discrimination, while LGBT advocates explore asking voters to pass the bill since it’s unlikely to clear the GOP-led Legislature.

In his State of the State speech, the Republican governor called for continued discussion over amending Michigan’s civil rights law to prohibit discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents in employment, housing and places open to the public.

Michigan governor pushes for LGBT rights

LANSING (AP) — Governor Rick Snyder is urging the Republican-led Legislature to keep alive a bill that would amend Michigan’s civil rights law to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation.

The legislation stalled last year. But in Jan. 20 night’s State of the State speech, the Republican governor called for lawmakers to continue the debate and “show that we can deal with issues of discrimination.”
