Phoenix (AP) – A Phoenix city councilman said that he will not heed calls for his resignation over a video in which he appears to bemoan same-sex marriage and transgender people’s use of restrooms that correspond with their gender identity.

“I will continue to fight for all people’s rights, and I will continue to make sure the city of Phoenix is welcome to everyone,” Michael Nowakowski said during a news conference at City Hall.

Manila, Philippines (AP) – World boxing star Manny Pacquiao has drawn an outcry in the Philippines after publicly denouncing people in same-sex relationships as “worse than animals.”

Pacquiao, a high school dropout from a poverty-stricken rural family who went on to become a boxing legend, made the remark when he and other Philippine senatorial candidates were asked by the local TV5 network about their views on same-sex marriage.

SAO PAULO (AP) – A minor character in Brazil’s election race faced a firestorm of criticism on Sept. 29 after saying during a presidential debate that the country needs to stand up against gay people who should receive psychological help far away from the general population.

The comments by presidential candidate Levy Fidelix, who has the support of less than 1 percent of potential voters, drew no reaction from the leading candidates during the nationally televised debate late Sept. 28. But online and on social media tens of thousands of people denounced Fidelix as homophobic and hateful.
