CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A former Australian prime minister who was a vocal leader of the national campaign against gay marriage attended the same-sex wedding of his lesbian sister Friday and welcomed his sister-in-law into his family.

Slovak vote on gay rights curbs not binding due to turnout

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) – A nationwide referendum on restricting gay rights in Slovakia has failed to produce a legally binding result after the required number of eligible voters did not turn out.

In the Feb. 7 vote, Slovaks were asked whether they agree to three points: that marriage can only be called a union between a man and a woman; that same-sex partners must be barred from adopting children; and that it’s up to parents to decide whether their children receive sex education.

Croatia to vote on marriage equality

Zagreb, Croatia (AP) – Croatia moved Friday to hold a referendum on whether to allow gay marriages, but critics say the vote is discriminatory and gay rights groups are challenging its wording as biased and unconstitutional.

Parliament voted to have a Dec. 1 ballot asking the question: “Do you agree that marriage is matrimony between a man and a woman?” If a majority vote “yes,” Croatia’s constitution will be amended to specifically define marriage as between a man and a woman, in a de facto ban on gay marriages.
