Indonesia police arrest dozens in raid on Jakarta gay sauna

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) – Indonesian police detained dozens of men including several foreigners in a weekend raid on a gay sauna in the capital, another sign of growing hostility to homosexuality in the world’s most populous Muslim nation.

Police spokesman Argo Yuwono said 141 men were detained for questioning in the raid Sunday evening on the gym and sauna in north Jakarta. Police say the sauna was the venue for a sex party promoted as “The Wild One.”

Egypt acquits 26 men arrested in gay bathhouse raid

CAIRO (AP) — An Egyptian court on Jan. 12 acquitted 26 men arrested in a televised raid last month by police looking for gays at a Cairo public bathhouse, a ruling that set off deafening cheers and jubilation inside the courtroom as some of the defendants uncovered their faces and wept openly in relief.

Others, however, kept their faces hidden behind jacket hoods and scarves, still traumatized by the humiliation they and their families had endured during the highly publicized case, which caught the public’s attention after a pro-government TV network aired scenes of half-naked men being pulled from the bathhouse by police during the Dec. 7 raid.

Egypt judge says verdict next week in gay bathhouse raid trial

CAIRO (AP) — The judge in the trial of 26 men arrested in Egypt in a televised raid by police looking for gays at a Cairo public bathhouse says he’ll announce a verdict next week after only three hearings.

The judge said Jan. 5 he’ll announce the verdict Jan. 12. Such quick verdicts are common in Egypt’s misdemeanor courts.

Egypt’s gays go deeper underground, fearing crackdown

CAIRO (AP) – Just before midnight, the police navigated down the narrow alleys of an old downtown Cairo district and descended on a rundown bathhouse. They dragged out dozens of nearly naked men, who covered their faces as they struggled to hold up towels, and loaded them into police trucks.

There to film it all was an Egyptian television presenter, who claims she actually triggered the raid by tipping off police about alleged gay activity in the bathhouse. Days later, she aired what she boasted was an expose of “a den of mass perversion” spreading AIDS in Egypt.
