Tampa VA’s pride program spotlights aging LGBTQ vets

TAMPA | The James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital will hold its annual pride event June 27 to highlight the intricacies of caring for aging LGBTQ veterans.

The event is organized by the hospital’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion in conjunction with its LGBTQSA special emphasis program. According to the hospital, the latter exists “to identify and address barriers, stereotypes and other related issues in the workplace,” to “foster allies, increase awareness of health care issues” and to “advocate for a caring, respectful and welcoming environment for our LGBT veterans, family members and employees.”

Disney comps LGBT youth for Gay Day at Magic Kingdom

A gaggle of red-shirt-wearing LGBT youth will converge upon the Magic Kingdom June 4, thanks to a donation of comped tickets from Disney to the Zebra Coalition.

According to Zebra executive director Heather Wilkie, 60 people are going: 45 youths and 15 chaperones.

Pride Night at Tropicana Field sets attendance record

Tampa – Pride Night at the Trop held on June 12 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg set a new attendance record for the event with over 700 tickets sold, three times the number that the event has attracted in the past.

“I’m pretty sure we started this event the first year of Pride,” said Brian Longstreth, founder and prime sponsor of the annual affair. “it’s always been a good strong Pride event, but this year we forged some new relationships with organizations like Equality Florida, the Metro Center and Tampa Pride and we got our promotions out early this year which really helped boost our ticket sales.” He thinks the event has been held every year since St. Pete Pride began in 2003 with the exception of perhaps one year at the peak of the recession in 2008.

Pride swells to record numbers as Jacobs’ appearance stirs controversy

Come Out With Pride 2013 broke all records to become the largest LGBT Pride event in Florida. In its ninth year, the Oct. 5 rally and parade were the culmination of a week’s worth of activism, partying, and community-building that saw more than 120,000 people participate throughout the day, according to COWP estimates. Official City of Orlando numbers are expected Oct. 10.

“There are so many things this Pride that really hit 100%,” says Mikael Frank Audebert, Executive Director and Senior Executive Producer of COWP.

22 detained after anti-gay attack at Montenegro pride event

Montenegrin police say they have detained 22 people over the clashes that erupted during the first ever gay pride event in the staunchly conservative Balkan country.

Police said in a statement July 25 that they are working to identify more people who were responsible for the incidents during the march on Wednesday in the coastal town of Budva.

Anti-gay activists attack Montenegro pride event

Budva, Montenegro (AP) – Several hundred people shouting ”Kill the gays” attacked gay activists and clashed with police on Wednesday in a bid to disrupt the first ever pride event in staunchly conservative Montenegro, which is seeking to improve its human rights record as it bids to join the European Union.

Angry assailants threw rocks, bottles, glasses and various other objects – including chairs from local cafes – at several dozen flag-waving gay activists who shouted back ”Kiss the gays.” A shower of stones and bottles also landed on special police securing the gathering in the coastal town of Budva.
