PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — When the movie “Milk” reached theaters in the West African country of Togo a few years ago, Jean Pierre Nugloze made sure to go.

Though several decades and continents apart, the story of slain San Francisco activist Harvey Milk, as played by actor Sean Penn, felt very personal. Nugloze was openly gay in a country where homosexuality remains illegal.

Ex-Portland mayor’s assistant alleges sexual harassment

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The executive assistant of former Portland Mayor Sam Adams has accused him of engaging in unwanted sexual behavior and says that staffers adopted a “code of silence and complicity” that adversely influenced city hall policy on harassment.

Cevero Gonzalez sent a letter to Portland’s city commissioners, the current mayor and three other top officials Thursday night.

Venezuelan legally in Portland faces deportation

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A Venezuelan man who is HIV positive and is in the U.S. legally was arrested in Portland in a pre-dawn raid because of a methamphetamine possession conviction, his immigration lawyer and a rights group said on Monday.

Luis Garcia, a nurse at a hospice center in Portland, now faces deportation to a country that is in an economic crisis, and where medicine is scarce.

The Portland Press Herald reports  the executive committee of York County Republicans voted July 27 to not take disciplinary action against county GOP chairman Jim Booth.

Portland, Maine (AP) – A county Republican Party leader in Maine has come under fire from Democrats and fellow Republicans for an email they say belittles an openly gay state lawmaker.

The Portland Press Herald reports an email from the account of York County Republican Committee Chairman Jim Booth sent to party activists refers to Rep. Justin Chenette, a Democrat, as “Little Justine” on several occasions.

School revokes job offer after learning woman is gay

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Catholic school in downtown Portland has rescinded its job offer for a college counseling position after learning that the candidate is gay.

The Oregonian reports 27-year-old Lauren Brown says St. Mary’s Academy withdrew its offer in late July after she told an administrator about her sexual orientation.
