Paintball shooting in Lake Eola linked to potential LGBTQ hate crime

ORLANDO | Police are investigating a possible hate crime at Lake Eola Park in Orlando after several LGBTQ individuals were attacked by a paintball gun being shot from a moving vehicle on July 27. The attacker also shouted homophobic slurs at the victims.

One Orlando resident, who asked not to be identified by name, was shot in the leg with paintballs while playing the popular app game “Pokemon Go” with a friend at Lake Eola Park. He also says that a lesbian couple in the park told him they were also hit with paintballs.

Georgia man arrested after pouring boiling water on gay couple

ATLANTA (AP) – Jail records show that a man remains in jail after he was accused of pouring boiled water on two gay men inside an apartment in suburban Atlanta.

Local news media reported March 16 that 48-year-old Martin Blackwell has been charged with two counts of aggravated battery in the incident that occurred last month. In a police report, Blackwell says he was disgusted with the men’s relationship.

KKK distributes anti-gay flyers in Jacksonville neighborhoods

The flyers were distributed in the Riverside area, well-known as Jacksonville’s LGBT neighborhood, as well as in the Mandarin and Southside neighborhoods, according to Jimmy Midyette of Jacksonville Coalition for Equality, a civil rights group who has been working to get sexual orientation and gender identity added to the city’s Human Rights Ordinance.

Close call: 12 year old charged with shooting at transgender woman

Orlando – A 12-year-old boy is charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot at a transgender woman near the Citrus Bowl.

The victim, Cheyenne West, is not hurt.

“I’m fine. I was walking along Church St. headed toward OBT and when I was close to OBT the young man came around the corner and said ‘I’m gonna kill you’ and started shooting and that’s when I started running,” West says. “He was chasing me and shooting at me.”

Transgender woman’s body found near Tampa community center

Tampa – Police are trying to find out what happened to a 25-year-old transgender woman whose body was found at a Tampa community center playground July 21.

Samuel Clarke, who identified as female and went by the name India, was discovered by an employee of the University Area Community Center as it was being opened just before 9 A.M.

Gay students attacked by peers at Atlanta school

Atlanta – Two gay students who attend Carver School of the Arts in Atlanta were attacked by a number of peers and authorities are saying the attack was not a hate crime.

Timothy Jefferson, 16, and Zyderryo Brown, 17, said that a mob of 20 teens attacked them, including one who used a screwdriver, and another 100 kids watched after school on April 20. Jefferson believes the attack was premeditated because of his sexual orientation.

Police investigating Zebra House theft

On Thanksgiving morning, thieves ransacked a storage unit owned by the Zebra Coalition, stealing clothing and other items intended for LGBT youth.

Dexter Foxworth, Zebra Coalition’s executive director, said he was tipped off about the theft by construction workers who noticed the unit was partway open and the lock was broken.

Former WNBA star arrested for alleged attack on ex-girlfriend

Former WNBA star Chamique Holdsclaw is in custody after being accused of shooting into a woman’s car after using a bat to break its windows.

Atlanta police said the incident happened Tuesday, Nov. 13 after the Olympic gold medalist followed 29-year-old Jennifer Lacy to her car. Lacy plays for the Tulsa Shock.

Lacy, 29, who described herself as Holdsclaw’s former girlfriend, told police she was working out at a church on Ponce de Leon Avenue on Nov. 13 when Holdsclaw approached her and said she wanted to put some items in Lacy’s car.
