GOP rejects call to back off gay marriage opposition

CLEVELAND (AP) — Republican officials have rejected an emotional plea to back off the GOP’s opposition to same-sex marriage, renewing the party’s embrace of religious conservative values as delegates prepared to welcome Donald Trump to their national convention.

Republicans who gathered July 11 to shape their party platform in Cleveland this week also refused to reverse their opposition to bathroom choice for transgender people, exposing a rift with their presumptive presidential nominee — despite internal warnings that social conservative policies on gay rights alienate voters.

Texas Gov. Perry compares being gay to alcoholism

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Texas Gov. Rick Perry, during a visit that focused primarily on economic issues, drew on a reference to alcoholism to explain his view of being gay.

Perry’s comments to the Commonwealth Club of California came after Texas’ Republican Convention on June 7 sanctioned platform language allowing Texans to seek voluntary counseling to “cure” being gay.
