Folk’s high elder John McCutcheon carries the mantle of pioneer Pete Seeger, who called his friend and protégé “one of our country’s best songwriters.” McCutcheon’s mastery of the simple song told with literary craft rests in his ability to use the small details of life to paint a hard and poignant view of the big picture—that is the true art of folk music.
