Angela Ponce will be the first transgender woman to compete for the Miss Universe crown, the Huffington Post reports.

Ponce, 26, won Spain’s Miss Universe in June making her the first transgender woman to earn the title. She will now advance to compete in the worldwide Miss Universe pageant which will take place in the Philippines in December.

The president of the Philippines on Sunday said he supports marriage rights for same-sex couples.
The Philippine Star newspaper reported Rodrigo Duterte told members of the LGBT community in Davao City on the island of Mindanao that he wants same-sex marriage in the Philippines, but “we’ll have to change the law.”

“We can change the law,” Duterte reportedly said.

US Marine admits choking transgender Filipino, denies murder

MANILA, Philippines (AP) – A U.S. Marine charged with murder testified in court Aug. 24 that he choked a Filipino unconscious during a fight that started when he discovered that she was a transgender woman in a Philippine motel but stressed that he didn’t kill her, his lawyer said.

Lawyer Rowena Flores said her client, Marine Pfc. Joseph Scott Pemberton, told the court in Olongapo city, northwest of Manila, that Jennifer Laude was unconscious but breathing when he left her in the shower of a motel, where they checked in to have sex after meeting in a bar in October last year. Pemberton panicked after seeing her unconscious and left.
