Every year we see romantic couples and groups of friends in their matching Halloween costumes, hitting the parties to show off. Wouldn’t we all rather couple up our costumes with our best friend in the world—our pet?

Pet costumes give you an excuse to hang out with your furry little friends on a night when all your other friends insist that you go out. Plus those outfits make your cute little pet even more adorable.

On Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 10 AM Our Lady of Perpetual Help will be hosting the 4th annual Blessing of the Animals.  In honor of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals, we host this event where we welcome everyone to bring pets (leashed or in a carrier).  Our Pastor, Father Hector Cruz, will have a short message and bless each pet.  Since our pets are a blessing, we want to return the favor! The event is also to raise the community’s awareness of OLPH.  We encourage all to take a peek inside the church to see one of Ybor City’s jewels while visiting.  There is NO fee or charge for attending the Blessing of the Animals, and parking is also free while it lasts across the street from the church.

Here are the specific details:

Anyone with a well-behaved pet is welcome to bring that pet to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 1711 East 11th Avenue, Tampa, FL  33605 at 10 AM, Saturday, September 30, 2017 for a special blessing in honor of St Francis of Assisi.  Dog treats and kitty treats will be provided to owners, and water dishes will be placed around the property to be available for those pups who get thirsty. Any pet spiders are on their own.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church is situated on land in Ybor City, standing on the site where the original church, Our Lady of Mercy, was completed in 1891. In 1937, a new Romanesque style church was constructed on the site of the original wooden church, Our Lady of Mercy. The new church was named Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) at that time.

Pet lovers are often animation lovers, too, I know, looking to our animals for wildly, colorful entertainment – like living cartoons. We search online for videos of puppies who act like goofballs or kittens who don’t quite make the jump. The Secret Life of Pets taps into that great slapstick so many of us love.

It is a good thing the characters – as shallow as they are – and the shtick liven things up. The story in Pets is really a retelling of the first Toy Story, where the established dog/toy gets displaced by the new dog/toy. A rivalry ensues that takes both of these enemies far outside, far from their comfort zones, and then they must band together to survive the cruel out-of-doors and find their ways back home.

To enjoy St. Pete Pride, be prepared with these hints

Even though St. Pete Pride is in its 12th year, you may not necessarily be as prepared as you think you are. With a new schedule, a few new rules and Florida’s unpredictable climate, we thought it might be a good idea to offer a checklist of sorts for the estimated 130,000 attendees headed to St. Petersburg’s Grand Central District the last weekend of this month.

Remember, this is a four-day event now, with a special Pride ceremony at City Hall at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 26, concert on Friday, June 27, a night time parade on Saturday, June 28, and a street festival on Sunday, June 29. It’s a long weekend, and to ensure you enjoy it, it’s best to be prepared and avoid surprises.
