Why is Halloween like Gay Christmas?

History probably gives us some insight. Halloween is rooted in religion, but those origins are a convoluted mixture of Christian observances and pagan rituals.

The LGBTQ community’s relationship with religion has historically been, and continues to be, tenuous; maybe we recognize ourselves to that aspect of the October 31 celebration. Halloween is generally considered a decadent holiday so much so that Christian bloggers suggest alternatives like, we kid you not, a Reformation Day Party. (One such blogger inexplicably suggests a Noah’s Ark Party as an alternative to trick-or-treating. Now that just screams: “I need gay friends!”)

HAVANA — The ability of Cubans to find a way to work things out, which translates as “resolver” in Cuban Spanish, truly defies explanation. It proved particularly useful on Saturday night at Havana’s most popular gay party.

Café Cantante is a nightclub near Plaza de la Revolución that hosts Proyecto Divino, a party that features cabaret singers and other performers. It takes place every Saturday.

“Amazingly, more Americans are willing to walk away from God than they are the familiarity of our two-party system. Thousands of years of religion we can discuss, process, and make a decision on, but with politics we are enslaved to an immovable object.”

I love the ritual of voting. I can’t bring myself to vote absentee, I can’t get into early voting; I have to go to the poll on the day. I love checking in with a poll worker who makes sure I am who I say I am, then standing in a flimsy pop-up “booth” and filling in the ovals next to my choices. I’m meticulous in my filling-in, making sure every bit of the oval is black and making sure I’m filling in the right oval (I have a bit of irrational anxiety about filling-in the wrong one).

WelcometotheJunglePartyPosterBreak out your Tarzan costume.

Instead of a “Black and White Gala,” The GLBT Center of Central Florida will host a “Welcome to the Jungle” party this year on June 17 at the Orlando History Museum.

The event, which will be headlined by former Pussycat doll J Sutta, includes a silent auction, gambling, dancing, food, drink, stilt-walkers and free professional body-painters.

The Center, whose mission is “to promote and empower the GLBT community and its allies through information, education, advocacy and support,” is attempting something of a rebranding, according to board member Rob Domenico.
