Idaho appeals ruling ordering surgery for transgender inmate

BOISE, Idaho (AP) | Idaho said Jan. 9 it will appeal a recent court ruling ordering the state to provide gender confirmation surgery to a transgender inmate.

The Idaho Department of Correction filed a notice advising U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill that the state will appeal his ruling to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The inmate would be the first in Idaho to get the procedure while in state custody and only the second inmate in the nation to receive the surgery.

NCLR and Equality Florida warns Clay County School Board against transgender discrimination

Jacksonville – The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) is warning the Clay County School Board about disregarding the Department of Education’s transgender guidance.

NCLR sent a legal memorandum May 19, on behalf of Equality Florida, telling the Clay County School Board it is against federal law to discriminate against transgender students and doing so could result in funding loss.

Win or lose, marriage equality is likely headed to Florida’s Supreme Court

Miami  On Jan. 17, six same-sex South Florida couples entered the Miami Beach Clerk’s office and applied for a marriage license. Because marriage equality is illegal in the Sunshine State, all six couples were turned down.

On Jan. 21, those same couples filed an historic lawsuit in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, challenging that Amendment 2, the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, and other Florida laws banning marriage equality, are unconstitutional.

Six South Florida couples file a lawsuit for marriage equality
