TAMPA | Tampa Pride kicked off its 2020 fundraising Nov. 2 with “Wild Carnavale,”  the second annual Pride Zoo-La at ZooTampa at Lowry Park.

The fundraiser began with a performance by the Tampa Bay Pride Band. Guests were treated to an artists’ showcase highlighting local talent, raffles from area organizations and up close and personal interactions with zoo animals, including a special giraffe feeding.

ST. PETERSBURG | Watermark’s bi-monthly Tampa Bay social Watermark Wednesday benefited PFLAG Tampa and PFLAG St. Pete at Sirata Beach Resort Sept. 18.

PFLAG is the nation’s first and largest organization dedicated to uniting the LGBTQ community, their families and supporters. It has more than 400 chapters, including Tampa’s which formed in 2011 and St. Petersburg’s which followed in 2017.

PHOTOS: Equality Florida’s 2019 Tampa Gala

TAMPA | Equality Florida held its annual Tampa Gala at TPepin’s Hospitality Centre Feb. 23, highlighting the organization’s fight for statewide equality.

The gathering featured live entertainment, silent and live auctions and honored community champions throughout the evening. John and Nancy Desmond received the 2019 Voice for Equality Award, Prin Ocea received the 2019 Youth Voice for Equality Award, the University of South Florida Office of Multicultural Affairs received the 2019 Partner in Equality Award and Gene Webster-English received the 2019 Community Service Award.

PFLAG Tampa paves the way for love in Ybor

Watermark’s Most Remarkable People John and Nancy Desmond – community activists known for their work with Tampa Pride, PFLAG and more – have long shared their support for the LGBTQ community throughout Tampa Bay.

On most weekends, the duo can be seen on 7th Ave. in Ybor City proclaiming that support and love, pro-LGBTQ signs in hand across from religious protesters. Now, even if they can’t make it, the protesters will be greeted from below with a paver reading “I love my gay son, PFLAG.”

What a delight it was to have met John and Nancy Desmond at a GaYBOR District meeting in 2010.

They have been a super positive force that trumps a lot of gays and lesbians in their commitment to the LGBTQ community.

They are outgoing, funny, empathetic, stellar and confident. These two speak their minds and are great team players in all they participate in and volunteer to do. Organizations that I have personally had the great honor of working with them includes: GaYBOR Distinct Coalition, Hillsborough County Homeless and Tampa Pride.
