The Evolution of Us: Make it a contract worth renewing

Back in the 90s there was a TV show called Earth 2. It was kind of cheesy (about future colonists who were trying to make a go of establishing a human colony on another Earth-like planet) but still entertaining. It did, after all, star the sexy Antonio Sabàto, Jr!

One thing that resonated for me in that show was when two characters’ marriage was “up for renewal,” and the wife wasn’t sure she wanted to renew. In this future society, marriage was indeed a contract, but with an expiration date that you can negotiate for renewal—similar to satellite radio subscription. This “contract” concept of marriage always stuck with me.

First look at renovation plans for the GLBT Center

Orlando – The GLBT Center will receive $147,000 in grant funding that will go toward a major renovation of The Center’s headquarters on Mills Ave.

The grant, announced at the organization’s Black and White Gala fundraiser held at the Orlando Museum of Art Oct. 4, is a Community Development Block Grant comprised of federal funds approved and distributed by the City of Orlando. The grant dollars represent 75 percent of total renovation funds. In order to receive the full amount, The Center must raise the other 2 percent – about $50,000—by the end of 2014.

Converge launches Orlando honeymoon campaign

Orlando – Although Florida doesn’t have marriage equality, it does have sunshine, access to fabulous sandy beaches and loads of theme parks, shopping and restaurants.

Converge Orlando Inc., the Central Florida LGBT Convention and Visitors Bureau, plans to capitalize on those assets by launching a HONEYMOON: Destination, Orlando campaign in December.

Zebra Coalition awarded $625,000 from the White House

The Zebra Coalition has received a $625,000 federal grant, the largest in its history, for programs to help prevent substance abuse among young people.

The money will come from the White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy over a five-year period and all but guarantees the stability of the organization.
