Collin Martin becomes first openly gay, active player in MLS history

Minnesota United midfielder Collin Martin came out via Twitter June 29, making history as the only openly gay, active player in Major League Soccer, and the big five major pro sports leagues.

“Tonight my team, @MNUFC , is having their Pride night. It’s an important night for me — I’ll be announcing that I am an openly gay player in Major League Soccer. #soccerforall,” Martin tweeted.

NFL and MLB will march in NYC Pride for the first time

The NFL and MLB will march in New York City Pride for the first time on June 24, according to OutSports.

The leagues will have floats and will appear in the parade along with the NHL, NBA and WNBA.

Orlando City Soccer pays tribute to shooting victims

The Orlando City Soccer Club paid a moving tribute to the victims of the Pulse shooting at their home game against the San Jose Earthquakes June 18.

Scores of the 37,194 in attendance that night waved rainbow flags and wore “#OneOrlando” shirts to show their solidarity with those killed the morning of June 12. Forty-nine seats were sectioned off and had multicolored balloons tied to them to form a rainbow pattern. Orlando City players wore rainbow-colored wristbands and “#OneOrlando” patches on their jerseys.

New MLS expansion team has gay owner

Los Angeles – The brand new Major League Soccer expansion team recently awarded to Los Angeles has a gay owner.

Rick Welts, president and COO of the Golden State Warriors Basketball Club, has been out for years, and is just one of several owners of the yet-to-be-named team.
