SALT LAKE CITY (AP) | Utah’s most powerful LGBTQ support organization wants legislation that would ban gay conversion therapy for minors.

Equality Utah has drafted a measure aiming for Utah to join more than a dozen states and the District of Columbia in outlawing efforts to change a minor’s sexual orientation to heterosexual, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Bill banning gay conversion therapy sent to NH governor

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – The New Hampshire House has sent to the governor a bill that would ban therapy that attempts to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of minors.

House lawmakers agreed May 10 to accept changes made to the bill by the Senate and advance it to Republican Gov. Chris Sununu, who has said he supports banning such therapy.

Seattle City Council bans ‘conversion therapy’ for LGBT youth

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle City Council has unanimously passed an ordinance to bar the practice of “conversion therapy” to try to make young LGBT people straight.

The measure proposed by Councilmember M. Lorena González passed unanimously August 1.

Ban on gay conversion therapy passes Colorado House

DENVER (AP) – A measure to forbid Colorado mental health professionals from practicing gay conversation therapy with minors has cleared the state House.

The proposal passed on March 10 on a 35-29 vote with one Republican, Rep. Daniel Thurlow of Grand Junction, joining every Democrat in the chamber who supported the bill.

US Supreme Court rejects challenge to gay therapy ban

WASHINGTON (AP) – The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected a challenge to California’s law that bars mental counseling aimed at turning gay minors straight.

The justices on June 30 let stand an appeals court ruling that said the state’s ban on so-called conversion therapy for minors doesn’t violate the free speech rights of licensed counselors and patients seeking treatment.

New York proposes bill to ban gay conversion therapy on minors

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – A proposed ban against New York health professionals trying to change a child’s sexual orientation through therapy comes too late for Matthew Shurka, a 26-year-old Long Island man who says he remains emotionally scarred from five years of attempts to “cure” his being gay.

“My anxiety was at its worst,” Shurka said of the therapy that began when he was 16. “I never attempted suicide, but I had a lot of suicidal thoughts and dreams and thinking about it, considering it.”
