BOGOTÁ, Colombia — A transgender woman who is running for the Colombian Senate hopes to make history in the South American country.

Tatiana Piñeros on Monday formally registered her candidacy with Colombian election officials.

First trans Uruguay senator ‘honored’ to have made history

The first openly transgender person elected to the Uruguay Senate told the Washington Blade on Oct. 24 she feels “very honored” to have made history in the South American country.

Michelle Suárez — who is a member of the Uruguayan Communist Party — spoke with the Blade nearly two weeks after she formally assumed her seat on Oct. 10.
