The fear of Tropical Depression Alberto pouring down rain wasn’t enough to keep the geeks, gamers and cosplayers away from MEGACON last weekend.

MEGACON Orlando is the southeast’s largest comics, sci-fi, horror, anime and gaming event, and attracted over 100,000 fans to the Orange County Convention Center over four days.

Fans of film and fans of the fabulous can rejoice, because the Fabulous Independent Film Festival (FIFF) is about to shante its way back to Sarasota.

The festival is a part of the annual Harvey Milk Festival, and as always, aims to connect the community through independent film. Now in its seventh year, the festival is currently scheduled to take over Burns Court Cinemas from October 6-8. Films are TBA, but you can stay up to date at fabulousiff.com.

Love is Love

Earlier this year we mentioned that MegaCon Orlando —the Southeast’s largest comics, sci-fi and gaming event —in conjunction with comic book writer Marc Andreyko of DC Comics hosted the “Love is Love” fundraiser in honor of the victims from the Pulse tragedy.

Andreyko, you may recall, was the project organizer for the graphic novel Love Is Love, the oversize comic containing tributes to the victims of Pulse and celebrating the LGBTQ community.

On May 4, Pulse survivors, families of the victims, city and county officials and various media representatives gathered for an announcement regarding the future of the Pulse nightclub site. As people were checked and moved behind the fence, one news outlet was turned away.

Latin outlet Univision was denied access, and when questioned why, they were referred to the onePULSE Foundation’s public relations contact.

They and their straight counterparts will descend on Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center Apr. 10 through 12 for MegaCon, Central Florida’s massive multi-genre convention. Expect elaborate costumes, miles of merchandise, tons of games and multitudes of meet-ups!

Professing a love of X-Men, Harry Potter, anime, or live-action-role-play may seem trivial compared to LGBT struggles, but there are several definite similarities. For years, many gay geeks had trouble admitting their love. They were shamed, teased, and even bullied.

Indiana could lose lucrative gaming convention due to discrimination bill

Adrian Swartout, the convention’s CEO, has warned that she’ll move the event out of Indiana if governor Mike Pence signs SB 101, a bill that would permit discrimination against the LGBT community, with the legal reasoning being religious freedom.
