Melissa Crispo and Candace Salemi“My favorite thing about Candace is she has a beautiful heart,” Melissa says. “She has so much love in her, and not just for me but for everybody—and it just shines.”

Candace Salemi, who is a senior higher education specialist, and Melissa Crispo, who is a musician/songwriter and paramedic, hung out in the same circle of friends for 15 years. Candace came to see Melissa perform regularly, but they only ever considered themselves acquaintances.

Lincoln, Neb. (AP) – A bill introduced in the Nebraska Legislature would prevent child placement agencies that refuse to license gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender foster parents on religious principle from losing state funding.

Lawmakers heard testimony Wednesday from Christian agencies that say they might be forced to choose between their religious beliefs and state funding after a Nebraska judge struck down the state’s ban on same-sex foster parents last year.

The couple behind Smith & Adams is chasing their chocolate-covered dreams

By : Jamie Hyman

Behind the glass-encased counters of Smith & Adams, a newly-opened confectionary in Colonial Plaza, the shiny, colorful gems of artisanal chocolate look more like art than candy.

The visual appeal makes sense as Kelly Smith, who handles the product side of Smith & Adams, went to art school before culinary school. Following that, she was a chef at Disney for 25 years before she and her partner, Kim Adams, decided to quit their jobs and take a risk on their own shop. Adams was previously an attorney and handles the business end of Smith & Adams.

The Other Side of Life: Hold, Fold, Walk Away

Jason Leclerc

It was only recently, quite honestly, that I restored my membership in the Grand Old Party. I had defected in the late ‘90s in favor of Libertarianism which I, in my wiser thirties, decided was too radicaland un-nuanced an answer to our nation’s ills. I’ve always considered myself a Jeffersonian and agree that his brand of liberal democracy is best suited for a small insular, wealthy, homogeneous, market-directed nation. His theories and writings, quite aside from his biting politics, form the basis for an ideal, academic thought experiment.

Alas, that is not our America; while I think this was potentially Jefferson’s America—an America made, in many ways, rich on the backs of slaves—it is an America that can’t—without a severe and painful social, economic and cultural restructuring—be recaptured. Besides the dark past of Libertarianism’s (then called Democratic-Republicans) first true experiment in America, pure modern Libertarianism, informed most famously by the objectivist theories of Ayn Rand, devolves into selfishness, arrogance and self-absorption (and awful prose).

Tallahassee (AP) – Kevin McCarty, who helped guide Florida’s fragile insurance market in the wake of eight hurricanes a decade ago, is resigning as the state’s insurance commissioner.

During his 13-year tenure, McCarty dealt with the near collapse of the state’s homeowners insurance market, major changes in health insurance and contentious legislative battles over auto insurance, medical malpractice and the state-created Citizens Property Insurance.

“Our section leader in the Chorus, Sheri, we call her our ‘Sheri Godmother,’ kind of nudged Nick into my direction, knowing that I really liked him. We have a lot to thank Sheri for—for getting us together,” Manny says.

Uprisings!: Fox Business Network will be hosting the worst Republican dinner party ever tonight. We’ll be liveblogging at 9 p.m.

And here we thought we were going to go sweetly into that warm bubble bath as the evening met its slumber. Nope. Instead, we’ll be doing what we do best while drinking in our underpants with dogs akimbo: liveblogging our thoughts on the currents and currency of the Republican presidential runaway train as it makes its next wobbly stop on the TEEVEE at 9 p.m. One and all should gather around their television tubes and bend their antennae in the direction of something onerous called the Fox Business Network. OR, you can pull out your phone, your iPad, your Kindle, your hair and just watch as we ruminate on how low politics can go. Either way, it will be fun. There are numerous drinking games, of course, because that’s what we’ve turned into. Our friend Peter Scorsch at saintpetersblog.com has been getting a chub about them all day. However, we have to work early in the morning, and our drinking will likely be supplemented with a lot of “How bloody dare you?” and “What would your mother think?” exhortations. Still, you don’t want to miss it. (We didn’t liveblog Friday’s Democratic “forum” because it was a “forum” and we were busy, but it was pretty spectacular and civil; Rachel Maddow is our spirit animal). Enough ranting for now. We’ll see you for the BIG GAME tonight. Over/under on Jeb and Marco making out? 0/0.

8:48 p.m.: TOOK A NAP! I have no idea what happened in Junior Varsity yet. Sometimes it’s better when you don’t know. Of course, that’s impossible. Bobby Jindal went batshit and Chris Christie’s “side fender” has been dented according to FOX guy.
