After protests, Serbian gay pride march happens without incident

Belgrade, Serbia (AP) – Waving rainbow-colored flags, several hundred gay activists proceeded undisturbed through downtown Belgrade on thanks to the protection of thousands of riot police.

The Sept. 28 march advanced for only several hundred meters through the empty Belgrade streets where shops were closed and public transport was stopped. Still, it was important symbolically as a rare public event staged by gays in this highly conservative Balkan country.

LGBT group to march in NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade

NEW YORK (AP) — A gay group will march under its own banner for the first time in the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade, organizers said Sept. 3.

The prohibition on identified gay groups in the centuries-old New York parade had made participation a political issue. Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio refused to march this year, and Guinness beer dropped its sponsorship.
