Ruth Eckerd Hall on the Road presents The Psychedelic Furs at the Palladium in St. Petersburg on Thursday, October 20 at 8 pm. If you were to dissect the alternative rock dominating today’s music, you’ll find that much of it pays homage to The Psychedelic Furs. Led by vocalist and songwriter Richard Butler and his bass-wielding brother Tim, the Furs won over fans and critics alike by combining poetic lyrics, innovative rhythms and melodies driven by an aggressive, punk desperation. Through it all, the band scored major hits with Love My Way, Pretty In Pink, Heaven, The Ghost In You and Heartbreak Beat. In all, releasing seven studio albums and spawning several compilations, a boxed set and a live concert DVD. The band continues to tour around the world with a lineup that has remained the same for over 35 years.

PHILADELPHIA – On the final night of the Democratic National Convention, Hillary Clinton in her acceptance speech for Democratic presidential nomination late Thursday sought a broad coalition to take on Donald Trump.

“We have to heal the divides in our country,” Clinton said. “Not just on guns, but on race, immigration and more. That starts with listening to each other, hearing each other, trying, as best we can, to walk in each other’s shoes.”

Tampa Bay-based writer, columnist and self-proclaimed “poet-economist” Jason Leclerc is no stranger to Watermark’s readership. He’s been brave enough – even lexicon-swirled-in-laughter enough – to make a strong argument for being a gay Republican, which is no easy task in these pages. In 2013, Leclerc released his first book, a collection of math and reflections in the mirrors of logic like few before it called, oddly, Momentitiousness. On Aug. 7, Leclerc’s follow-up tome Black Kettle hits the stores and the internet with a different tone. He’ll be doing some reading and mingling and signing among friends from his hometown and fans from all over.

One reading, Leclerc says, will be a story called “Baptizer.” (“I’ve read it a couple times since Pulse, and I weep,” he says. “I don’t know how selfish that sounds. In light of Pulse, I think you’ll get chills, because I wrote it three years before.”)

Los Angeles (AP) – Hollywood films remained static in their inclusiveness of LGBT characters in 2015, but the racial diversity of those characters fell dramatically, according to the findings of GLAAD’s annual study.

In a survey released May 2 by the advocacy group, 17.5 percent of last year’s films from the seven major studios contained characters who were lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

Transgender army major wins victory in conservative Serbia

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — In macho Serbia, he came across as macho as they come: an army major in a military culture that glorifies masculine strength. He was a perfect husband and father in a society that preaches family values. But for nearly his entire life, the major felt he was living a lie: Deep down, he was a woman.

Last year, he came out, telling his family and superiors that he was Helena — and starting therapy to become a woman. She did not remain Serbia’s first transgender major for long: The army asked for her resignation, saying she “posed a threat to the reputation of the army.” In April, Helena scored an important victory: A Serbian human rights body ruled that the army had discriminated against her by saying she was a potential stain on its honor.
