Federal court urged to strike down Puerto Rico birth certificate policy

Lambda Legal has urged a federal court to strike down a Puerto Rico policy that does not allow transgender people to change the gender marker on their birth certificates.

The group made the request in a brief it filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico on June 26.

Guam rejects territory’s first same-sex marriage license application

HAGATNA, Guam — Guam on April 8 rejected a marriage license application from the first-same sex couple to apply for the document in the U.S. territory.

A Department of Public Health and Social Services clerk refused to accept an application filed by Loretta Pangelinan and Kathleen Aguero.

Alabama bill could allow refusal of gay couples by adoption agencies

Montgomery, Ala. (AP) – Alabama would allow adoption agencies – including those with state contracts – to refuse to place children with same-sex couples on religious grounds, under a bill introduced in the Alabama Legislature.

Republican Sen. Gerald Allen of Tuscaloosa introduced the bill last week specifying that groups could refuse to participate in adoptions and foster care placements that violate their religious beliefs. The bill would also prohibit the state from refusing to license, or contract with, the groups that refuse services to people on religious grounds.

Woman arrested as same-sex couple gets Alabama marriage license

PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) – An Alabama woman is facing a disorderly conduct charge after offering to perform a same-sex wedding inside a courthouse.

Autauga County Sheriff Joe Sedinger says the woman was arrested Feb. 10 in the probate office.

Alabama recalls NOHOMO vanity plate

Montgomery, Ala. (AP) _ A personalized license plate with a gay slur slipped past a review panel in Alabama, and the state said it’s recalling the tag, which showed up in social media on photos of a black Mustang.

The license plate has the saying “NOHOMO,” a slang phrase used when the speaker does not want to appear gay. The state prohibits personalized tags with profane or vulgar messages, Alabama Department of Revenue spokeswoman Amanda Collier said.

Same-sex marriages start in South Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – A South Carolina court has issued a marriage license to a same-sex couple despite the state’s constitutional ban against the practice and the attorney general’s pledge to defend it.

Charleston County Probate Judge Irvin Condon issued the license Oct. 8 morning to two women: Charleston County Councilwoman Colleen Condon and Nichols Bleckley.

Keys marriage forms changed to accommodate same-sex couples

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) – Marriage-license forms in the Florida Keys have been changed to accommodate same-sex couples, even though a judge’s ruling that gays can marry in Monroe County has been stayed pending a state appeal.

Since Judge Luis M. Garcia ruled July 17, siding with same-sex couples in the Keys who challenged Florida’s voter-approved ban on gay marriage as discriminatory, the county clerk’s office has been inundated with calls from people making plans to fly to Key West for their weddings, said Ron Saunders, the attorney for the clerk’s office.
