Serbia’s first gay minister wants less public attention

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) – The woman slated to become the first openly gay government minister in highly conservative Serbia said Aug. 9 she hopes public attention surrounding her election will soon fade so she can focus on her new job.

Ana Brnabic, who is expected to become the minister of public administration and local government, told The Associated Press that “I would prefer to get it out in the open right now and get it over with, so that afterward I can focus on my work.”

Government study: HIV diagnosis rate fell by third in US over decade

NEW YORK (AP) – The rate of HIV infections diagnosed in the United States each year fell by one-third over the past decade, a government study finds. Experts celebrated it as hopeful news that the AIDS epidemic may be slowing in the U.S.

“It’s encouraging,” said Patrick Sullivan, an Emory University AIDS researcher who was not involved in the study.
