W.Va. GOP chief rebukes delegate’s remarks on gay community

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) | The head of the West Virginia Republican Party has denounced comments from a GOP member of the House of Delegates about the gay community.

State GOP chairwoman Melody Potter says in a statement Mercer County Delegate Eric Porterfield’s comments were “hateful, hurtful, and do not reflect the values of our country, our state, and the Republican Party.”

Delegate compares gay community to Ku Klux Klan

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) | A West Virginia delegate has told a reporter he thinks “the LGBTQ is a modern day version of the Ku Klux Klan.”

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports Del. Eric Porterfield made the comments after calling to discuss a story on controversial earlier comments. The Mercer Republican also told the reporter the gay community is a “terrorist group.”

Proud Boys founder sues SPLC over hate group label

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) | The founder of a far-right men’s group filed a defamation lawsuit Feb. 4 against the Southern Poverty Law Center for labeling the organization as a hate group, in the latest attempt to use litigation to fight the extremist label.

Gavin McInnes, founder of the Proud Boys — an organization that describes its members as “Western chauvinists” — contends in the lawsuit that he was banned from social media platforms and saw his livelihood suffer after getting the designation from the SPLC.

KKK distributes anti-gay flyers in Jacksonville neighborhoods

JacksonvilleBigotFlyersThe Ku Klux Klan distributed flyers encouraging gay bashing throughout Jacksonville neighborhoods Nov. 20.

The flyers were distributed in the Riverside area, well-known as Jacksonville’s LGBT neighborhood, as well as in the Mandarin and Southside neighborhoods, according to Jimmy Midyette of Jacksonville Coalition for Equality, a civil rights group who has been working to get sexual orientation and gender identity added to the city’s Human Rights Ordinance.
