ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – New York’s highest court has expanded the definition of parenthood by ruling Aug. 30 that former same-sex couples have the right to seek visitation and custody of children even when they aren’t the biological or adoptive parent.

The Court of Appeals decision resolves two cases of former unmarried same-sex couples in which the biological mothers kept the children and their ex-partners sought legal standing to see them. In one case, lower courts ruled the ex-partner had no standing. In the other, the ex-partner pays child support and was later granted visitation.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has lamented that children are being taught at school that gender can be a choice, adding that his predecessor, Benedict XVI has labeled current times “the epoch of sin against God the Creator.”

Francis weighed in with his view on gender and what he said was that of the emeritus pontiff while meeting privately last week with bishops from Poland during his pilgrimage there. The Vatican released a transcript August 2 of those closed-door remarks.

Parents push for gender-neutral children’s clothes

New York (AP) – Pink for girls. Truck motifs for boys. A growing number of parents want to get outside those parameters when it comes to dressing their kids.

Kristin Higgins was adamant about not pushing “girly” stereotypes on her daughter, and painted her room in shades of green. Higgins later dressed her up in superhero costumes. But as her daughter got older, it took more work to locate items that broke the mold. For “Star Wars”-themed pajamas, she had to go to the boys’ section.

Screened Out – Pan

Hugh Jackman, Levi Miller, Garrett Hedlund, Rooney Mara, Amanda Seyfried

What a mess! This Peter Pan origin story strives to be something whimsical, weird and wonderful for the kids. It instead ends up clueless, confusing and cluttered. If all you’re looking for is stunning visuals, Pan is definitely for you. If you like your movies to have solid, even acting and some sense of tone, this Lost Boy never gets off the ground.

Pan doesn’t believe that characters with heart can carry a children’s movie. It instead overloads oddities, offering only optical onslaught.

Off to The Villages
It was a packed crowd at the Gulfport Casino as women from throughout Tampa Bay gathered to celebrate the retirement of Suzanne Noe. Noe, the founder of ProSuzy.com, stepped away from the business two years ago but still handled the financials. Now, Noe is completely out of the business and will relocate to The Villages in Central Florida later this spring. Guests were invited to sign a large banner noting Noe’s retirement and a DJ provided dance music all night. ProSuzy.com is still active, but it is now under new ownership.

Tampa Pride already expected to expand
The rainbow flags from the inaugural Tampa Pride haven’t even been rolled up yet, but organizers are already talking about the 2016 celebration. Word is that the entertainment stage, which was in Centro Ybor this year, will move to Centennial Park just down 8th Avenue. For those familiar with the Santa Speedo Run, that’s where the start and finish line is for that charity run each December. One organizer also told Watermark that they expect to use more of 8th Avenue in 2016 to accommodate even more street vendors, since the festival sold out this year. Get details, as they come out, at TampaPride.org.

Denver (AP) — Colorado Republicans in the Senate rejected a bill April 8 to ban gay-conversion therapy for kids.

The bill, sponsored by Democrats, would have banned therapists from trying to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of children. It failed 3-2 on a party-line vote in a Senate committee.

The Evolution of Us: Make it a contract worth renewing

Back in the 90s there was a TV show called Earth 2. It was kind of cheesy (about future colonists who were trying to make a go of establishing a human colony on another Earth-like planet) but still entertaining. It did, after all, star the sexy Antonio Sabàto, Jr!

One thing that resonated for me in that show was when two characters’ marriage was “up for renewal,” and the wife wasn’t sure she wanted to renew. In this future society, marriage was indeed a contract, but with an expiration date that you can negotiate for renewal—similar to satellite radio subscription. This “contract” concept of marriage always stuck with me.

Zach Braff, Kate Hudson, Josh Gad, Mandy Patinkin, Pierce Gagnon, Joey King

This is Zach Braff’s infamous Kickstarter film, the one that he shot by raising funds through the Internet. It feels like everyone who gave him five bucks also gave plot ideas. Though Wish possesses some lovely scenes, great acting and charm cannot pull it together.

As a writer and a director, Braff showed serious promise with Garden State, ten years ago. In contrast, this misbalanced but touching dramedy tries to cover too much story.
