The Other Side of Life: Standing with Kneelers

Another football season is upon us. Thank God. Thank America.

I stand for the National Anthem. Even at sports bars, if the sound is turned up, I’m that guy who feels compelled to slide off my stool and remove my ball cap while “The Star-Spangled Banner” plays. I’m, admittedly, obnoxious that way. For the dozens of other people around me who don’t partake in this symbolic ceremony, I have no judgment. This, though not hidden, is a private act: a moment of reflection. I know that for those in fields and stadiums and parks and for other hoppy-fruity patriots in other bars, the moments that precede kickoff—including humming or mouthing along to this sonorous anthem—are as important to me as touchdown dances, chest bumps and the high drama of red zone defensive stands.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) – Michael Sam became the first openly gay player to appear in a Canadian Football League game Aug. 7, playing sparingly for the Montreal Alouettes in a 26-23 loss to the Ottawa Redblacks.

“I was focusing on my assignments, actually,” Sam said when asked if he was thinking about the significance of the moment prior to kickoff. “I’m not going to lie, there were some big jitters out there and I was nervous when I first got on the field. I didn’t get any opportunities to make many plays. I had some good pass rushes, I thought, but close enough is not a sack.”

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas police have destroyed a record outlining a nearly decade-old investigation into reality TV star Josh Duggar, a spokesman said May 22, a day after the 27-year-old resigned his role with a prominent anti-gay, conservative Christian group amid reports about sexual misconduct allegations from when he was a juvenile.

The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, which obtained the offense report before its destruction, reports Duggar was accused of fondling five girls in 2002 and 2003. Duggar issued an apology May 21 on Facebook for unspecified bad behavior as a youth and resigned his role as executive director for FRC Action, the tax-exempt legislative action arm of the Washington-based Family Research Council.

Gay Day at Holy Land: Squashed by chaos

By : Jamie Hyman

An extremely high turnout for the statute-mandated free admission day at The Holy Land Experience resulted in staffers turning many guests away at the door, including a number of LGBTs who showed up in red shirts trying to create a Gay Day.

So many people showed up for free admission on Oct. 6 that the park was full to its capacity of 1,500 guests just a few minutes after it opened at 10 a.m. Park employees stood outside the gates and offered people free passes for a different day. Despite the early shutdown, the area was plagued by crowds, parking problems and traffic for several hours, eventually causing police to completely shut down the I-4 Conroy Road exit. The park is located just east of that exit.
