Bill would prompt State Department to review ‘lavender scare’ firings

U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) introduced a bill that would prompt the State Department to review the termination of personal during the so-called “lavender scare.”

A press release that Menendez’s office released on May 1 notes the bill, known as the Lavender Offense Victim Exoneration (LOVE) Act, would direct the State Department “to review all employee terminations since 1950” and “identify all those who were wrongfully terminated because of their sexual orientation.” The measure would also require the State Department to establish boards “to hear their stories and correct their official records” and address anti-gay discrimination against diplomats and their families.

America celebrated the rise of the sitcom in the early 1950s, collectively declaring “I Love Lucy.” But as the country welcomed the golden age of television, fear-mongering politicians in D.C. were only seeing red.

That’s because Sen. Joseph McCarthy had introduced the second Red Scare to the masses, claiming that communists had infiltrated the U.S. federal government. Perhaps even more dangerous, Republican leadership asserted, were the gay men and lesbians who had done the same—deemed communist sympathizers and security risks susceptible to blackmail due to their homosexuality. Their hatred gave way to the Lavender Scare, a parallel witch hunt and the mass firing of gay and lesbian federal workers in the early 1950s.

Donald Trump has repeatedly called the multiple investigations into his campaign’s ties to the Russian government “the greatest witch hunt in political history.”

While there are multiple examples proving the president is incorrect, chief among them is the “lavender scare,” Senator Joseph McCarthy’s parallel to the “Red Scare” which insisted that Communists had infiltrated the government in the 1950s.

Cardin to introduce ‘lavender scare’ bill

State Department personnel who were fired during the so-called “lavender scare” would be able to have their employment records expunged under a bill that U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) will introduce on Thursday.

The Lavender Offense Victim Exoneration Act of 2017 — also known as the LOVE Act — would detail the history of the “lavender scare,” which sought to purge gay men and lesbians from the State Department in the years after the Cold War began.
