Appeal deadline approaches in fight over anti-gay study

Daytona Beach – LGBT blogger John Becker is expected to file a new appeal in his ongoing fight to obtain records from the University of Central Florida about a controversial study on gay parenting.

A clerk with the Fifth District Court of Appeals said May 20 the notice of a new case had been created in Becker v. UCF, though no documents had been filed.

Court fight continues over records in controversial gay parenting study

Daytona Beach – The University of Central Florida (UCF) Board of Trustees is spending thousands of dollars to hire a group of lawyers, led by retired Florida Supreme Court Justice Charlie T. Wells, to take a public records fight to the Fifth District Court of Appeal (DCA).

John Becker, managing editor of LGBT website The Bilerico Project, made a Florida public records request for emails and documents related to a controversial study, which claims heterosexual parents provide more stable homes than same-sex parents. The study came to light after it was cited in a U.S. Supreme Court case on gay marriage in March 2013.

Attorney says UCF should not be able to appeal public records ruling

Daytona Beach – For months, a circuit judge has ruled the University of Central Florida (UCF) Board of Trustees must turn over records relating to an anti-gay study of parents to John Becker, managing editor of The Bilerico Project, an LGBT news site.

Instead of complying with the judge’s order, UCF requested more time. When those delays ran out last month, UCF filed an appeal with the Fifth District Court of Appeals (DCA). The court granted a temporary injunction.

LGBT Activist Sues UCF

An LGBT activist and writer filed a lawsuit against the University of Central Florida’s Board of Trustees and President Dr. John C. Hitt last week in an effort to gain access to a controversial research paper.

The paper, titled “New Family Structures Study,” was cited in briefs and at oral arguments before the Supreme Court last month. It suggests gay marriage could have negative effects on children. John Becker said he made a public records request for a copy of the paper, which was denied by UCF. That led him to file suit in circuit court in Orlando.
