Civil rights leaders, transgender parents and LGBT advocates — joined by Reps. Joseph Kennedy III (D-Mass.) and Donald McEachin (D-Va.) — rallied before the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday in opposition to two Trump nominees, one with a history of anti-LGBT legal work, the other with a history of black voter suppression.

Trump judicial nominee called same-sex marriage ‘an assault on nature’

President Trump is facing calls to withdraw yet another judicial nominee who was recently revealed to have stated anti-LGBT views. In this case, the pick called the Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling same-sex marriage “an assault on nature” and “against God’s plan.”

Gordon Giampietro, whom Trump nominated for a position as a federal judge in Wisconsin, was revealed to have made the comments in 2015 during interviews with Lydia LoCoco, a social conservative who hosts a faith-based radio show. Buzzfeed was first to report the news Thursday.

White House: Anti-trans judicial nomination ‘not moving forward’

A judicial nomination by President Trump who had called transgender kids “Satan’s plan” and proudly said the Baptist Church discriminates against gays won’t move forward the Senate, the White House said Wednesday.

The news comes after Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, urged Trump to rethink the nominee as well as that of Brett Talley, a judicial pick who had never tried a case. A White House official confirmed to the Washington Blade “both Talley and Mateer will not be moving forward.”

In a rare public rebuke of President Trump, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee urged the administration to reconsider the judicial nomination of Jeff Mateer, who was recently exposed on tape calling transgender kids “Satan’s plan.”

Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) said in exclusive comments to CNN he advised the White House to “reconsider” the nomination of Jeff Mateer, whom Trump nominated for a federal judgeship in Texas. Additionally, Grassley said the administration “should not proceed” with the nomination of Brett Talley, who Trump picked to become a federal judge in Alabama.

Trump nominee said transgender children show ‘Satan’s plan’

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – President Donald Trump’s nominee for a federal judgeship in Texas – and the No. 2 in the state attorney general’s office – previously described transgender children as evidence of “Satan’s plan” and suggested that same-sex marriage could lead to polygamy and bestiality.

First Texas Assistant Attorney General Jeff Mateer’s comments came during a 2015 speech. They were first reported by CNN Sept. 20.
