Orlando – After years of success in Tampa Bay, Dining Out for Life will make its way to the Orlando area this April with benefits from the day-long fundraiser going to The GLBT Center of Central Florida.

Dining Out for Life raises money for AIDS service organizations. It happens every year all over the nation, and the Tampa Bay area was the closest area in Central Florida to participate. That event benefits the AIDS Service Association of Pinellas (ASAP). Local restaurants register to donate a minimum of 25 percent of their gross food and beverage sales on the day of the event, or make a single contribution of $750 or more. Each restaurant is provided a volunteer ambassador that will invite potential customers to the restaurant for the event and also help at the restaurant on that day.

We owe much of our astounding advances toward LGBT equality to drag queens. It was the drag queens of New York who fought back against the police during the Stonewall Riots of 1969 and it’s that community that continues to entertain and fundraise for charity today.

While I have respected those performers for a long time, I now have a whole new appreciation for what they do for our community. For I have walked a mile—okay, more like 200 painful feet or so—in their high heels.

Restaurants on both sides of the bay donated portions-or all-of diners’ food bills to the AIDS Service Association of Pinellas on April 26 as part of Dining Out For Life 2013. According to organizers, 13 more restaurants participated this year than in 2012, meaning financial returns could be slightly larger than in previous years.

“We had 64 restaurants this year,” said Jay Aller, Resource Development Manager for ASAP. “Not all of the restaurants we had last year came on board from last year because they had either closed or were struggling too much. So we had a lot of new participants, which was great.”

More runners than ever participated in the 2012 Santa Speedo Run Dec. 9, which relocated to the streets of Ybor this year. With costumes ranging from simple red Speedos and Santa hats to elaborate garland-trimmed costumes on four female runners, the holidays felt as if they were in full swing near Centennial Park.
