TIGLFF announces ‘Evolution of Drag’ fundraiser

The Tampa Bay International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (TIGLFF) has announced “The Evolution of Drag: Drag through the Decades!”—scheduled for June 1 at the Palladium in St. Petersburg—will serve as a fabulous fundraiser benefiting their upcoming 30th anniversary.

The drag production is described as a mixture of comedy, dance and history. Through the eyes of a drag queen, it transports audiences with “an exhilarating voyage through ten decades and has packed houses near and far!”

Florida’s drag families prove Mum’s the word

Drag culture is intrinsically tied to the LGBTQ community, from Stonewall to the life-dependent lip-syncs now featured weekly on VH1. Now more than ever it borders on the mainstream, with the art form highlighted (and contoured) on televisions worldwide and available now on iTunes.

As drag paints itself even further into the history of pop culture, it can be easy to forget that it has its detractors, often found in the safe spaces drag performers share. It can lead to camaraderie amongst entertainers as they gravitate toward one another for belonging and assistance, creating both a sense of family and of home.

Tampa Bay’s Overheard: Deck the halls

Fan-favorite performance arts queen Eden Deck will take a final bow at Quench Lounge in a farewell show on May 26, surrounded by special guests and an adoring audience.

“I’m sad to leave but excited for a new journey and to get to say farewell with good friends!” Deck shared on social media, noting she’ll be joined by local performers Jaeda Fuentes, Lady Janet, Star Montrese Love and others in an Elaine Southern Belle-hosted roast.
