France OKs bill legalizing IVF for lesbians, single women

PARIS (AP) | France’s lower house of parliament on Tuesday overwhelmingly passed a bill that aims to give single women and lesbian couples legal access to in vitro fertilization, egg freezing and fertility medication.

The assisted reproduction measures are part of a broader bioethics bill voted by the National Assembly, the lower house, where French President Emmanuel Macron’s government has a majority. The bill passed 359-114. It must still go to the Senate for debate.

PARIS (AP) | Conservative activists marched through Paris Oct. 6 to protest a French bill that would give lesbian couples and single women access to in vitro fertilization and related procedures.

Traditional Catholic groups and far-right activists who held mass demonstrations against France’s legalization of same-sex marriage in 2013 organized the protest, arguing that it deprives children of the right to a father.

PARIS (AP) | Single women and lesbians in France won’t have to go abroad to have babies anymore under a proposed new law that would give them access to medically assisted reproduction for the first time.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s government has presented a draft law on bioethics that includes expanding the eligibility for treatments such as artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization, or IVF. French law currently restricts assisted reproduction to infertile heterosexual couples.

Hawaii LGBTQ couples seek equal access to fertility treatment

HONOLULU (AP) – Sean Smith and his husband paid more than $20,000 for a fertility procedure when they decided to have a child using a surrogate mother. They did not know at the time that if they were a heterosexual couple, they might have saved that money.

Now, Smith and other members of Hawaii’s LGBTQ community are lobbying for equal access to the financial help married, heterosexual couples enjoy under state law.

Madonna reacts to Dolce & Gabbana comments

Madonna took to Instagram on March 18 to react to recent comments made by fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana about the traditional family and in vitro fertilization. Madonna, who previously worked with Dolce and Gabbana, used an image from a campaign with Dolce and Gabbana in 2010 in which she holds a baby.
