Ada County, Idaho adds LGBTQ status to anti-discrimination policy

BOISE, Idaho (AP) | Ada County has expanded its anti-discrimination policy to include protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) employees.

Boise State Public Radio reports the new policy has been in the works for a couple of months now, and was recently approved by the Ada County Commissioners.

Suspect in Utah killing of LGBTQ rights advocate found in Idaho after 2-day manhunt

BOISE, Idaho (AP) | Idaho police captured a man May 24 suspected of shooting and killing a motorist in northern Utah earlier this week after a two-day manhunt.

Officers arrested 45-year-old Jonathan Llana about 3:15 p.m. in an area of southern Idaho outside of Pocatello about 10 miles from where the suspect crashed his car into a canal after a police pursuit May 22, according to news releases from Idaho State Police and the Utah Highway Patrol. LLana had broken into a house in the area and stolen an all-terrain vehicle, they said. No officers or residents were injured.

Judge: Idaho can’t delay transgender inmate’s surgery

BOISE, Idaho (AP) | A federal judge says Idaho prison officials cannot delay gender confirmation surgery for a transgender inmate while they appeal the court ruling requiring them to provide the surgery.

U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill made the order March 4, saying he believed the Idaho Department of Correction’s appeal in the case was likely to fail and that delaying Adree Edmo’s surgery could cause her great harm. The ruling means the original deadline for providing the surgery — June 13 — remains in place.

Idaho appeals ruling ordering surgery for transgender inmate

BOISE, Idaho (AP) | Idaho said Jan. 9 it will appeal a recent court ruling ordering the state to provide gender confirmation surgery to a transgender inmate.

The Idaho Department of Correction filed a notice advising U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill that the state will appeal his ruling to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The inmate would be the first in Idaho to get the procedure while in state custody and only the second inmate in the nation to receive the surgery.

Judge orders Idaho to give transgender inmate gender surgery

BOISE, Idaho (AP) | A federal judge says Idaho must provide gender confirmation surgery to a transgender inmate who has been living as a woman for years but who has continuously been housed in a men’s prison.

Barring any appeals, under the ruling Adree Edmo will become the first Idaho inmate to receive gender confirmation surgery while in Idaho Department of Correction custody.

Leaders behind LGBTQ measure shut political action committee

BOISE, Idaho (AP) | A group that has long pushed for Idaho lawmakers to pass legislation to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from employment and housing discrimination has shuttered its political action committee.

The PAC was terminated in June because organizers are currently working to broaden the group’s platform and change the name, said Chelsea Gaona-Lincoln, the chair of Idaho’s Add the Words.

Idaho high court: Unmarried gay partner has no custody right

BOISE, Idaho (AP) – The Idaho Supreme Court has denied custody and visitation rights to a gay woman who raised a child with her former partner, reflecting state laws that have not been updated since same-sex marriage became legal in 2014.

The couple raised the child together after splitting up in 2012. But their relationship deteriorated two years ago, and the child’s biological mother barred her former partner from contacting the child, who is now 7.

Idaho man sentenced in killing of gay man

BOISE, Idaho (AP) – An Idaho man has been sentenced 28 years in prison for his role in the death of a gay man.

Third District Judge Thomas J. Ryan sentenced 23-year-old Kelly Schneider on Monday. In January, Schneider pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in state court in the death of 49-year-old Steven Nelson.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) – The Idaho House Revenue and Taxation Committee has voted to bring the state’s tax code in line with federal rules, despite facing objections from two lawmakers who argued the state should not be recognizing same-sex marriages.

The Idaho Legislature usually syncs the state’s tax code with the federal version each year to make it easier for residents and businesses to do their taxes.
