Mexico City (AP) – The Mexican Soccer Federation launched a campaign urging fans to refrain from anti-gay chants that drew fines from FIFA earlier this year.

It may be a tough fight, judging by the plea’s failure to deter fans at a Mexican national team game March 29.

Alabama Supreme Court halts same-sex marriage licenses

Montgomery, Ala. – The Alabama Supreme Court on March 3 ordered the state’s probate judges to stop issuing marriage licenses to gay couples, saying a previous federal ruling that gay-marriage bans violate the U.S. Constitution does not preclude them from following state law, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

The all-Republican court in Montgomery sided with the argument offered by a pair of conservative organizations when they appealed a decision by U.S. District Judge Callie Granade of Mobile, who ruled in January that both Alabama’s constitutional and statutory bans on same-sex marriage were unconstitutional.

Georgia asks to halt same-sex marriage lawsuit until high court rules

ATLANTA (AP) – Lawyers for the state of Georgia have asked a federal judge to stop any action on a challenge to the state’s ban on gay marriage until the U.S. Supreme Court has a chance to rule on the issue.

The Supreme Court on Jan. 16 announced it will hear arguments on whether same-sex couples have the right to marry in every state. The cases will be argued in April, and a decision is expected by late June.

San Diego clerk requests halt to gay marriages

San Francisco (AP) – The San Diego County clerk has asked the state Supreme Court to stop gay marriages.

Ernest Dronenburg Jr. urged the state high court to immediately halt same-sex weddings while it considers his legal arguments that gay marriages remain illegal in California despite a U.S. Supreme Court’s decision widely regarded as authorizing gay weddings.

Opponents of same-sex marriage on July 12 demanded that the California Supreme Court immediately halt same-sex marriages recently resumed in the nation’s largest state after a 9-year legal battle.

ProtectMarriage, the group that sponsored Proposition 8 and its ban on same-sex marriages in 2008, launched a two-pronged legal attack to state officials’ interpretation that the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage when it relied on a legal technicality to toss a lower court’s ruling lifting the marriage ban in June.
