University of North Dakota plans own hate crime investigation after police say story was fabricated

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — The University of North Dakota plans its own investigation into an incident in which authorities say a reported hate crime on campus turned out to be a fabricated story.

Police investigators last week said a gay man who reported being the victim of homophobic taunting and an assault at a fraternity made up the story and actually instigated the fight. Police recommended charges against 18-year-old Haakon Gisvold but prosecutors declined, saying a conviction would be unlikely.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A monthlong police investigation has concluded that a gay man who reported being the victim of a hate crime at a University of North Dakota fraternity invented the story and actually instigated the fight.

Police recommended charging Haakon Gisvold, 18, who is not a UND student, with providing false information to police, but prosecutors declined.
