Alabama lawmakers pass workaround bill on same-sex marriage

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) | After some conservative Alabama probate judges stopped issuing marriage licenses over the issue of same-sex marriage, state lawmakers have come up with a workaround: marriage certificates that don’t have to be signed before the wedding by the judge.

The bill, which won final approval May 23, now goes to Gov. Kay Ivey for her signature.

Senate votes to take Alabama out of marriage business

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Senate has approved a bill that would do away with marriage licenses and the requirement for people to go through a wedding ceremony.

The bill comes as a few Alabama probate judges refuse to issue marriage licenses to anyone so they do not have to give them to gay couples.
