Cynthia Nixon blasts Cuomo as ‘bully,’ ‘wannabe Republican’

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Actress Cynthia Nixon blasted Gov. Andrew Cuomo as a “bully” and a “wannabe Republican” Monday during her first visit to Albany since announcing her bid for New York governor.

The “Sex and the City” star and public education advocate criticized the two-term governor for not doing enough to ensure equal opportunities for poor and minority students. She also faulted Cuomo’s effort to combat government corruption and said that while he touts himself as a progressive, he’s governed as a member of what she called Albany’s “old boys’ club.”

NY Gov. Cuomo announces anti-discrimination initiatives

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed an executive order that bans all New York state agencies and authorities from conducting business with companies that tolerate or promote discrimination.

The Democrat also said he’s supporting legislation that will ban the use of a “gay panic” defense in which a person charged with attacking someone attempts to blame the victim’s sexual orientation for a violent reaction.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) called Saturday night for the defeat of President Trump in Election 2020 and a change of Congress to enact long-sought after federal non-discrimination protections for LGBT people.

Gillibrand, a possible Democratic contender in 2020, made the remarks Saturday at the 2018 HRC Greater New York Gala, encouraging attendees to join efforts to make change in the mid-term election and the presidential election in 2020.

Transgender New Yorkers Have New Health Insurance Protection

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Transgender individuals in New York state have new protections when it comes to health insurance coverage.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo says health insurers can’t deny coverage based on gender identity. A state Department of Financial Services letter Wednesday tells health insurers to take reasonable steps to determine if the insured is eligible for services before denying a claim.

NY commission seeks artists to create LGBT memorial

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – A state commission is searching for artists to design an LGBT memorial honoring victims of hate, intolerance and violence, including those killed in June’s attack in an Orlando gay nightclub.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the memorial and established a commission to create it in the wake of the Orlando shootings that killed 49 people.

NY governor adds gender identity to anti-bias rules

NEW YORK (AP) — Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo used his executive power Oct. 22 to expand the state’s anti-discrimination rules to safeguard transgender people, creating a protection advocates had been fighting for years to try to receive.

Cuomo, speaking to about 700 people at the Empire State Pride Agenda’s annual dinner, said the current law didn’t go far enough to protect the rights of all state residents. He directed the state’s Division of Human Rights to issue a regulation that would interpret the anti-discrimination law to prohibit discrimination against transgender people. His move prohibits discrimination against a transgender person when it comes to jobs, loans, schools and public accommodations.

New York governor details state plan to end AIDS epidemic by 2020

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – New York state will end its AIDS epidemic by 2020, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said April 29, vowing to add the virus to the list of largely vanquished killers such as polio and smallpox.

The details of the ambitious proposal are spelled out in a list of recommendations by a task force Cuomo appointed last year. The suggestions include greater focus on HIV testing, treatment and the use of pre-exposure drugs that can prevent new infections in high-risk groups.
