Orlando’s LGBTQ Center changes name, debuts new logo

ORLANDO | In honor of a milestone year, the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of Central Florida, Inc. is changing its name to The LGBT+ Center Orlando, Inc.

The Board of Directors approved the decision to legally change the name and logo on Jan. 13 at the organization’s annual board retreat. Board members supported the name change as a way to update the organization and The Center’s imprint on the community.

2016 was the worst year ever, and 2017 was the year we found our footing

In these very pages one year ago we proclaimed 2016 to be the worst year ever. It started off with so much promise and optimism, with the official passing of the torch as the former owner of Watermark turned the reins over to new owner Rick Claggett and Watermark Media became Watermark Publishing Group.

President Barack Obama was heading into the final year of his second term and everything seemed in place for another torch to be passed, that of the first black president passing the country off to the first female president.

Former head of Orlando Fringe named new executive director to The Center

George Wallace, The Center’s new executive director.

ORLANDO | Former executive director to the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival, George Wallace was named the new executive director to the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida by the board of directors Dec. 1, according to a press release from The Center.

“When I saw the Executive Director position become available at The Center, I immediately jumped at the chance,” Wallace said in the press release. “This is a wonderful opportunity, not only to return to my home and the city I love, but to work for such an established and crucial agency.”

Central Florida and Tampa Bay recognize World AIDS Day with events from coast to coast

World AIDS Day is the first ever global health day and has taken place every Dec. 1 since 1988. It is a day which the entire planet comes together to remember the nearly 40 million lives lost to the virus, but also to acknowledge those still living with the disease today and to celebrate the advances made in fighting HIV/AIDS.

From candlelight vigils to luncheons and HIV testing sights, several groups and organizations have events throughout Central Florida and the Tampa Bay area for you whether you want to pay your respects or know your status.

From drag queens to bears, we know what to expect at a Pride event. Some of those expectations are the religious fanatics usually protesting in their designated sections.

Unfortunately, on Monday, June 12, a day of remembrance for the 49 victims of the Pulse shooting, approximately three “Christians” showed up with hateful signs and words.
