US appeals court favors gay-straight club at Carver Middle School

LEESBURG, Fla. (AP) — A federal appeals court has ruled that students at a Florida middle school have the right to form a gay-straight alliance club.

The decision by the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Dec. 6 came after the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida appealed a previous judge’s decision that school officials could deny the club recognition. The court’s reversal opinion found the club should have equal access to use school facilities as other extra-curricular clubs.

Iowa Catholic school allows gay-straight club

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A West Des Moines Catholic high school has approved a request by students to form a school-based gay-straight alliance called “One Human Family.”

Dowling Catholic High School gave the approval for the club April 24, The Des Moines Register reported.
