When attending the Fringe Festival with a Fringe virgin, what kind of show should one expose them to? Perhaps a light-hearted musical, a deep dark dramatic play, maybe a pantomime comedy?

Nah, screw all that.. I decided to go for the skin! And there’s lot of skin as there usually is at the Fringe this year. As usual, there are several groups of burlesque shows featuring all sorts of ladies, you also have some rock hard and perfectly manicured men gyrating a la Magic Mike, not bad but just watch out for the puddles of baby oil.

Ryan Reynolds, Ed Skrein, Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Leslie Uggams

We knew we were in for something twisted. In early promos last year, Deadpool said, “Crime’s the disease; meet the cure! Okay, maybe not the cure, but more like a topical ointment to reduce the swelling and itch.”

The film Deadpool delivers! (I’ll even use the rare exclamation point.) It’s likely to fill current addicts to the brim with sick, bubbly joy, as it adds a few more adherents. This gory, action-packed flick punches home the perversion – clearly a niche missing from the current pantheon of noble comic book films.

Screened Out – The New Girlfriend

The New Girlfriend will be on DVD and for rent on Tuesday, Jan. 26.

This cross-dressing psychological flick is rather good, but it never quite hits the freaky sexual fission it shoots for – especially for a modern film.

French director/writer François Ozon (8 Women, Swimming Pool) usually peddles in a careful balance of understated wit and sexual tension. Girlfriend has bits and pieces of those. As enjoyable as this is, this film’s subjects just aren’t dangerous and titillating enough in 2016.
